FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about calibration gases for different types of gas detectors.

The calibration gas should correspond to the target gas and the detector manufacturer's calibration procedure. Propane, butane, methane or another specified hydrocarbon may be used depending on the detector.

For natural gas/PNG detectors, methane is commonly relevant because methane is the principal component of natural gas in many applications. The detector manufacturer's specified calibration gas should be followed.

Hydrogen calibration gas containing a known H₂ concentration is normally used when calibrating hydrogen sensors.

Ammonia calibration gas with a known NH₃ concentration is used for ammonia detector calibration.

A known chlorine concentration can be used for chlorine detector calibration. Because chlorine is reactive, appropriate cylinder and mixture stability considerations are important.

The appropriate oxygen reference/span gas depends on the oxygen detector and its calibration procedure. Air or another specified oxygen concentration may be used depending on the instrument.
